Preface
We stock pumps by Danner, Laguna, Savio, Sequence and other name brands.
Before choosing a pump, it is important to calculate the required flow rate for
the water feature. Flow rates are usually specified in gallons per hour (gph) or
litres per hour (lph). In nature, ponds are often fed by a stream or spring and
by this means receive a constant influx of fresh water. The majority of garden
ponds are man-made closed-loop systems and depend upon recirculation for
aeration and cleansing.
The recommended minimum turn-over rate for a fishpond
is the total volume of the pond circulated every two hours. For example, the
minimum turn-over rate of a 2000 gallon pond would be 1000 gallons per hour
(1000 gph). For this pond we would need a pump capable of supplying 1000 gph at
the return point to the pond. The return point is often a waterfall, so we also
need to take into account the height of the waterfall above the pond surface
(this is known as the 'head'). The head is important factor when sizing a pump
because the pump has to work against the force of gravity when the water is
pushed above the pond surface. Using a waterfall height of approximately 3 feet,
we would determine that a pump rated at approximately 1400 - 1500 gph should be
able to supply the pond with at least 1000 gallons an hour at the waterfall
output (3' head).
Note that in the above example, we stated that the
turn-over rate of once every two hours was the recommended minimum for
the average fishpond. In practice, other factors come into play which will
effect the choice of pump. If the pond has a high fish stocking level or
contains large koi, a turn-over rate of once every two hours may not provide the
fish with sufficient oxygen on a hot summer day. If the pond is designed with a
wide waterfall, the pump must supply enough water to cover the lip of the
waterfall & produce a satisfactory appearance
Please feel free to contact us if you are looking for a
particular brand or size of pump. Special orders usually arrive in 2 - 7
business days, depending upon the brand of filter.
